Prerequisites: Proficiency in the knowledge and skills in Technology Applications (Computer Literacy), grade 6-8. This course is recommended for students in grades 10-12.

• Course Overview/Content/Outline
Four technology strands are covered in Web Mastering: foundations, information acquisition, work in solving problems, and communication.

• Course goals
Upon completion of the course, the student will demonstrate knowledge and appropriate use of operating systems, delineate and make necessary adjustments regarding compatibility issues and be able to summarize the technical needs of a World Wide Web (WWW) server, components of the Central Processing Unit of a PC, methods of connectivity, and appropriate software. Students will have a basic understanding of the history of the Internet and the protocols that have developed (http, gopher, file transfer protocol, telnet, and wide area information system). Students will construct appropriate search strategies in the acquisition of information from the Internet. Each student will publish his/her own WWW pages that include text, hypertext, audio, video, and graphics. Students will be able to evaluate the design (for content and delivery) of WWW pages and demonstrate skill in testing the accuracy of information. Students will maintain a web site containing several directories.

• Readings—selected readings and current events discussed in class or assigned for homework
• Assignments—most assignments will be done in class. Outside assignments can be completed on school computers or at home if student has access to the Internet.
• Exam Dates—announced at the beginning of each unit. 2-3 per grading period. Major projects count as test grade.
• Quiz Dates—2-3 (some may be unannounced) for each unit
• One major project per grading period—counts as a test grade

• Attendance—if absent, get notes from another student and arrange lab time to make up work. It is the student’s responsibility to get make-up assignment. Make-up work is due the SECOND class period after you return to school. Long-term assignments due dates DO NOT CHANGE due to absences. Assignments are posted on the class website.
• Class Participation included in daily grade
• Missed exams—schedule with teacher within two days upon return to school.
• Missed assignments—to be completed within two days upon return to school.
• All work should be your own. You may be asked to produce the material during a class period.
• Grading will be done on a point system. The weight for each assignment will roughly adhere to the scale below. Students will know the total points of assignments at any given time during the six weeks, and should be able to calculate their own grade if they have recorded all of their assignments correctly.
o Class Participation, Daily/Homework, Quizzes -- 30%
o Tests/Major Projects – 70%
• No food, drinks or gum in computer lab. DETENTIONS will be assigned. This is a level 1 offense. Each student will get FOUR passes that can be used for restroom breaks, trips to their locker and/or other emergencies. These passes are VALUABLE. They can be redeemed at the end of the six weeks or semester for 1 pt. to 6 weeks average or semester exam.
